Aigio is the second largest city of Achaia (with 21,500), built amphitheatrically with a wonderful view at the Corinthian Gulf. The foothills of the mountains Helmos and Panachaikon and rivers Selinountas and Meganitis are the physical boundaries of the area."The name is interpreted as the "city of the waves" due to its location. Located at the ancient Aigio where archaeological excavations have brought to light parts of Mycenaean cemeteries and findings of the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman eras. It was the first town liberated by the Turks during the War of 1821 (March 26). It lies 41 km east from Patras.

 
Worth Seeing
  • The old part of town to the beach (from Agia Tripiti to the Railway Station).
  • The historic plane tree (the beach), which Papfsanias mentions. This is a huge plane tree, with a large gap inside the trunk and great historical value. "Scientists estimate that the age is about 600 years. Very near is an old source, known as the Twelve Fountains.
  • The Psila Alonia square, with the incredible view to the Corinthian Gulf . In the center stands the Gothic tower, with palm trees around it, while the small park adjacent to the lakes and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier completes the picture of the most characteristic point of the city. In the region, there are excavated graves from Mycenaean period and also the small forest area of Pefkakia.
  • The Stairs at street Philopoemenos or "Skalakia" (along the railway line and the beach) built in 1901 and consisting of 172 steps and the “Tempelorachi” street with wonderful sea views.
  • The two quadrilaterals buildings of the 5th-4th century. BC High, to the tank of a modern city.
  • The classical era cemetery, NW, in the same place and the Hellenistic and Roman cemetery.
  • The Archaeological Museum, the restored Old City Market (1890, Ern.. Ziller work). Contains finds from the area, dating from the Neolithic to the Roman era.
  • The Local History and Folklore Museum Aigion (Despotopoulos and May 1 street), with a rich history and folklore material, exposed to nine rooms and covers the period from the Turks today.
  • The Old Hospital (now Cultural Centre) and the Public Library (Old School).
  • The cathedral of Panagia Faneromeni, built to plans by Ern. Chiller. Founded in 1898-1899, launched in 1914 and is the largest and most impressive temple in the city.
  • The church of Panagia Tripiti (Zoodoxos Pigi), patron saint of the city. It is built on the waterfront of a steep cliff 30 meters from the sea, in a cave (hole). Access from the public road via a staircase with 150 steps.
  • The surrounding villages Rododafni, Digeliotika, Fern, Pirgaki, Temeni, Valimitika and Plataniotissa.
  • The nunnery of Pepelenitsas (20 km N) and the male monastery of the Archangels (Moni Taxiarchon) (23 kms N), near the village Melissia (river Selinus).
