Mountainous Achaia

A large part of the region of Achaia is covered by hills and mountains accompanied by legends, stories, myths, tradition and rich history, as they have been staring points of uncompromising residents wanting to see Greece free. Either during Turkish occupation or during German occupation those mountains provided shelter to the passion of Achaioi and their desire to free their land. In any case, Achaia’s mountains are a superb "mosaic" of flora and fauna and a field of expression of a great architecture.

Panachaiko Mountain

 PANACHAIKO (1.926 μ.)

 
Rivers Glaykos and Selinountas are the natural borders of the mountain dousing its foothills of each side of the mountain. The old name of Panachaiko is Voidias. It used to have rich flora destroyed afterwards by incontrollable woodcutting and browsing. This phenomenon has resulted in big corrosion, which led to major slides of the unstable ground. Fauna as well was severely destroyed by incontrollable hunting. Fortunately, there are some very beautiful places preserved with big forests, such as Rakita, Mikroni, Prasoudi, which testify the glorious past of the mountain and make its present quite attractive. Geologically, Panachaiko belongs to Olenos-Pindos zone and mainly consists of flysh. One of its major characteristics is the succession of two types of biotopes and two types of grounds. Erymanthos mountain

 ERYMANTHOS (2.224 m)

 

Natural border with Ileia’s Region. The micipalities of Aroania, Tritaia, Kalavryta and Farres share its beautiful places. It is the native of the notorious wiled boar, killed by Hercules.
In any case, this mountain has been a shelter to all victims during Turkish Occupancy and later on during Italian - German Occupancy...

Chelmos mountain

 Helmos mountain or Aroania (2.355 μ.)

 

Close to the borders of Arcadia Region, near Kalavryta, there is Helmos Mountain. In Slavic, Helmos means snowed mountain. From Neraidorachi to Stygos Ydata, from Planitero to the Ski Centresof Kalavryta, from Elatofyto to Souvardo, there are hundreds of places visitors can admire and enjoy.

 
Even if you have not yet discovered the magic in trecking and climbing, you will surely do so if you begin with Helmos which by the way is included in the "NATURA 2000" network...

Afrodisio - Klokos - Skolis - Movri - Skiadovouni

AFRODIDIO (1.445 m.)
 
With its back on Arcadia, between Tripotamo and Dafni, reaching 1.445 meters. There are some really beautiful and picturesque small villages called Vesini and Dehouni which are traditional settlements, and southern there are Dafni (Strezova) and the Byzantine Monastery of Evangelistria. River Seiraios, gives people its freshness. On the mountain Afrodisio, there is the unique forest of Barbou with its perennial chestnuts, characterized as a natural monument. Afrodisio is also a place with a large number of wild boars; it is thus famous during hunting season.
